Roger, I don't think there's been anything more recent published about Ambassador selection since Kerrie's post The Orange Badge (which also includes a link to Niki's post on the same topic).
The reality is the Ambassador list is filled with a fair number of Rainers that are no longer active (perhaps there should be an Ambassador Emeritus type title?).
As far as the Community Guidelines, I know they didn't give me a test to verify I'd read them, but I suppose selection is or was based on demonstrated actions here in the Rain and I'd assume potentially recommendations from others to Staff.
And that's my engineering answer for your questions :) Bill

I remember when the Ambassador thing started, we were charged with calling new members and converting them to Rainers...getting them to see the value in blogging to the public. There was even a small commission in doing so, but I never was able to get it done. Since those days, the role has been a member that others could call on for guidance. It's mostly symbolic at this point.

Still laughing at Michael Jacobs answer. Many moons ago I was contacted by another Ambassador and asked to take the role of an Ambassador.

I was made an ambassador years ago for promoting Active Rain in my community and bringing people to join. A lot of this was instituted by Active Brad who I maintain a freindship with to this day. It has been a long time since anything was organized about it or any direction from AR as to the purpose. Maybe this will change with new ownership, but who knows?

I have asked this before as well and I think Chris Ann Cleland has the answer. What leads you to believe they have not read the Community Guidelines?

You might have to lure Kerrie out of retirement and see if she can provide an answer?

You would be a great Ambassador. We are there to assist others in the Rain when they have questions or just need a little push. When something is quirky, we go on a Facebook page for Ambassadors and quiz each other about issues. And yes I have read the guidelines......

I agree with Barbara Todaro ... completely. I don't think there has been a "new" Ambassador for quite some time, and some of them are no longer active in the 'Rain I believe.

I thought that their purpose was to 'help' with tech challenges, best practices here on AR. How do they get selected? Don't know.

007 connections my friend without reading the Guidelines purely by connection, one knows some one who knows some one and next thing you are in and become one of the exalted rulers:)))

Would think all Ambassadors would have to read the Community Guidelines, but love Michael's answer!

Roger - I know that it sure is not promoted or advertised here anymore, and I am not sure the last time someone became an ambassador. It would be interesting to know if this will change, or be updated in the future.
2,538,689
Good morning Roger. You are already an Ambassador, without the title.
4,321,670
Roger D. Mucci you have a valid point.
As an Ambassador, I have read and followed community guidelines - and will be shocked to know about the Ambassador who has not read it!
6,623,205
Having memorized the manual is not nearly as important as supporting the harmony of the community and helping others as you go through the day in the rain.
Many play the part well in this little community with or without an orange patch, and a few others fail to play it well as well.
3,988,138
An Ambassador should have read the community guidelines and demonstrate that they believe in the network and have a willingness to help others. There are many that don't wear the badge that are very qualified and supportive of the AR community and surpass the service given by many of the named Ambassadors that have gone silent.
I for one think when you are no longer active that your orange badge should be retired or at least you should be contacted to see if you intend to be coming back and helping with the role you were given and agreed to do. I guess there is not enough staff to do all this monitoring therefore we rock along like before.

I was nominated and accepted the position. I do work to encourage new members when I have time. I also try to be helpful when someone needs it. I have gotten emails and phone calls asking how to do something, and I do my best to help out that.
846,475
Can I throw my hat in the ambassador ring? I would promise to be a perfectly awful one that would never behave or follow the rules or call anyone back.
4,434,227
1,530,594
In my experience, the ambassador has been first level support and they act to keep the community vibrant and to educate on it's use. This is inline with the "Brand Ambassador" or "Evangelist" concept for companies. Usually unpaid persons who love the product so much they help people by answering questions on forums or get people to experience the product for the first time.
5,251,157
I believe these people volunteer for this gig to help fellow members. I believe they are supposed to contact new members. I was never contacted by anyone when I joined AR. I think at least 2 years passed of my being on AR before any body initiated a phone call to me and it had nothing to do with ambassadorship. Any one who is an ambassador and does read the guidelines should be ashamed.
3,408,180
Well, I've never known of any commissions as Chris Ann Cleland mentioned. As far as I know one has to complete an Ambassador application and then pass a rigorous exam.
Now, Roger D. Mucci your question implies that you know of an Ambassador who has not read the Community Guidelines. For reals?

At certain times in the past, ActiveRain would appoint certain people as ambassadors. These are volunteer unpaid positions. If I recall correctly, in some cases, they asked who might be interested and in other cases, they asked people if they might be interested.
Who was selected was based on various internal criteria that was not published and likely changed over time. However, I think it was geared towards people who were generally helpful in getting others to become active here or who may have published a lot of posts relevant towards using AR.
I don't think anyone has been appointed in quite some time, or if anyone has, it would be very few people.
