I don't believe that Google reads watermarks in images. They use text and various attributes within the HTML and other code that is physically on each page

I am careful to label each photo for SEO purposes but have never heard about watermarking for SEO.

I'm not sure where you're getting your info on that. I have never heard or read that on any SEO blog. But, if you have info on that and it's true, pls provide a link.
Alt tags certainly help and naming your photos. Those work as google doesn't read/interpret the images. For what it's worth, many of mine come up without watermarking.
