I was always under the impression that you were an associate broker once you got your real estate license. Maybe I'm not reading your question correctly.

Having a brokers license allows one to be a branch manager for a large firm or even open his own shop. You also learn a lot when you earn this credential.

We don't have Real Estate Agent in Indiana.  Everyone is a Broker or Managing Broker.  It used to be Licensee and Associate broker and Principal Broker.  The differences is the amount of education.

Kinda like a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree....more education!

Best reason is job security. You will always have a job by being able to open your own shop!

You no longer need a sponsoring broker. In other words, you can hang your license at home.  In IL, we all have to be brokers now. I guess it's 2-3 years now.

We don't have associate brokers in California, to my knowledge.  Owning your own company and making your own rules would be my reasons.  Being able to design your own sign and not follow someone else's sign rules (out here Berkshire Hathaway has a font so small you have to get up to the sign to see the agent's name or number!!).  Plus, you get to keep all your commission if you have your own company.

There are tradeoffs, of course.

Why not?  If real estate is your career, you might as well become an associate broker or to become a broker to manage your own company.
