SF on July 1, 2016, the minimum wage will increase to $13 , then each year $1 more a year.

If I make $15 an hour by 2018, I will be be cooking noodles or making pasta.

Today, if we stand at local street corner we can make about $20 an hour together. Want to split 50-50?

This is dangerous to our economy. Paying people more means charging more for goods. If someone wants more opportunity, seek that out but not a standard that when given, takes away like this will. This is a complex issue

I see both sides of this scenario and still haven't decided if I'm for it or not!   On the one hand, higher wages = increased spending

On the other hand, the small business owner won't be able to afford it and will suffer because of it.

Fortunately, no one I know will be affected.

PS.  I haven't earned minimum wage since the 70's when I was a starving student and realized to earn more I needed to learn more!!

Good Monday morning Paul. No, I've not heard of the $15 minimum wage. That is interesting. Talk about entitlement.

Good morning Paul. I have mixed feelings about a $15 minimum wage. Everyone that works for me, makes a lot more and they deserve it.

Paul,

I think we all have had moments where we had felt we worked for a lot less than minimum wages.  That was a while back in our lives.  It all goes back for us to working with the right people in the first place.  Have a great week, A

Paul, this is coming in California too.  Since this is political and I have EXTREMELY strong views about this, I will keep to myself on this one.

I am seeing a backlash from restuarants now.  I've seen pictures (as recently as last night) of automated ordering and payment kiosks at McDonalds.  Chili's has added the ordering and payment tablets to their tables.  "Stacked" a fancy build your own burger joint was the first out here to do that several years back when they opened.  The tech is popular in Australia for many, many years from what I've read.

What gets me is as they fight for a higher wage for unskilled entry-level labor meant to get your foot in the door, not be a career path, they cause the price of goods to go up and they encourage restuarant owners to implement technology to eliminate jobs.  We already saw this with the mandatory health care coverage for full-time employees at companies over a certain size.  Many people either lost their jobs or had their hours cut to part time (with their same hourly rate).

They never think of the consequences of their demands.  Business owners will find a way to not go out of business, usually at the cost of the workers.

It is a great way to drive up the unemployment rate and force many small and large companies to downsize.

If that is the objective then it is probably a great idea.

I make a lot more than minimum wage. I guess if i didn't work as hard and smart as  do I would be making less than minimum wages.

I always thought that minimum wage jobs were just job market or industry entry jobs , not life time jobs. Getting a pay increase to  $15.00 an hour, employees will probably become ineligible for a lot of the welfare programs etc. they are eligible for now because they earn less.  So they gain on one end and lose on the other? I never really looked into it but it does seem to be how it will work.

The $15/hour minimum wage is a big discussion in California as well.

Although there are times, when I'm sure we all feel we are not paid enough -- it's a matter of better time management and systems.

I've heard of it and have mixed feelings about it.  I don't think we will be able to afford to eat at yummy McDonalds if that goes into effect, there goes the dollar menu!  I can kind of understand both sides, but some of the jobs are not meant to be for a life time.  It may put some of the mom and pops out of business, and I do believe it's just a government move to get more tax dollars.  As for the other part of the question, it just depends on the transaction and people I am working for.  I am steering away from the ones that try to take me down to that rate!

It's more than the wage, it's the ground rules that a lot of employers have for scheduling that make it tough to make a living.

If you have kids or grandkids who will soon be in college, I would strongly suggest you sway them towards a mechanical/electrical engineering degree. There comes a point in a business cycle where it becomes more cost effective to automate your processess with robotics. We've already seen it in the automotive and agriculture industries. Soon it will become more mainstream, as the costs to employ humans becomes more prohibitive.

I earn many multiples of $15/hour. Even my housekeeper earns more than $15/hour. If I didn't, I'd do something a whole lot less stressful than real estate (maybe clean houses, as when you're done, you're done).

As the minimum wage goes up so do prices. Usually price increases outpace minimum wage. Good political conversation but sometimes poor economics!

Paul - Minimum wage of $15/hr is a job you can actually live on in many areas of the country, and is way more than the minimum wage when I was younger. I could never have lived on $3.35/hr. I, like you, always thought of the minimum wage as a stepping stone.

Listen, let's be honest. If someone makes $15 for a $10 job, then other employees will want $ 20 for a $15 job. Then prices will have to go up to pay for it, then the $15 wage will still be at the bottom-so what exactly is the point? What happened to the idea if you want more then make yourself more valuable?
