My first broker told me that success was directly linked to availability. That has not held true for me, and the more I honored my business and its hours of operation, the better for my business and the satisfaction of clients who get greater efficiency from me. My office voicemail states business hours of 8-4 M-F, although I am often available for established clients outside those hours. No intake after 7pm. There are a lot of agents who work nights, and I am not one of them. 6 am? Sure. If I answer, you got me.

My easy solution to that kind of nonsense is to turn off my phone. I don't publish my hours because I don't want a client to have a reason not to call me, to weed out agents they feel would be unresponsive to their needs, but after they become my client, I do let them know that I am available only from 7 AM to 7 PM, and to please use common sense on Sunday mornings.

When my day is done. It's done. I cannot possibly be there for others 24x7. I need to take care of myself. I serve no one by answering my phone at 9pm when my brain is fried. I serve them by returning their call when I am rested and recharged with a clear mind.

I do my best to be available to my clients no matter what, at all times. And if I miss a message or call, I will get back to them as soon as I can. Example: if I'm in the middle of cooking dinner....well, I will call them back as soon as I can.

Good morning Tony and Suzanne Marriott. My VM message shares the times I will return calls at my office. My referral partners have my cell number, all of which respect my time and I do the same for them.
Make it a great weekend!

No, but that might be a good way to set "privacy" boundaries. I know agents that have done it.

I don't publish specific business hours, but I do try to establish ground rules for calling at the initial consultation. Most people are pretty respectful.

Every time I meet with a new client, I let them know my hours are from 8 am to 8:30 or 9:00 M-Sat. and from 10-7 on Sunday. Of course there are exceptions - like negotiating an offer.....

No. Even doctors who are in ER dealing with all kinds of horrendous situations have people relieving them. Agents like everyone else need their sleep, their family time and their vacation time. A

I think it is unreasonable to expect anyone to be available 24/7 and don't say I am. On the other hand if someone leaves a message or emails they should get a prompt response within the agent's range of business hours. I do not think a real estate agent's workday can be limited to 9-5, M-F. So whatever hours an individual establishes should be conveyed to the client. I work from about 7:30am to 9:00pm daily and less than that on weekends.
If I am working a deal I have been known to be finishing it up at midnight.

No and I don't promise nor strive to be available 24/7. Real estate doesn't need to meet "emergency room" demands. When something is really urgent I do work at almost any hour on any day, but that's rare.

I don't but I do let my investors know. It is very difficult to set times when they are either contacting me from Israel or California for instance so I have to set separate parameters.

There is a reality that must be understood. The potential NEED of a client to reach their agent and the possible failure of responsible use of that access.
If a client of mine has fallen and can't get up,,,,and they called me at 2 am, I'll be on my way as I call 911.....that what happens when they TRUST and is that not the outcome agents say they want....TRUST.
If a client is trolling Zillow and needs HOA info about something they saw and they call at 2 am...clearly 'the talk' is in order.
I do not publish my hours, but I do say 'I'll answser my phone.' I'm good with that. One of the outcomes is the client is fully aware I am busy in the real estate business, but they FEEL they are the only client I have. I'm good with that.
A realationship based on respect and honor rarely results in abuse.
Now...if an agent is inviting calls from all places on the internet, there is no establishment of respect and honor, so the agent should plan accordingly.
