What is the opposite of Mentor? I had people who, by their own actions, showed me what NOT to do! The wheelin, dealin, Herb Tarlek type of salespeople who made my flesh crawl.

I wish I had. Everything I learned was on my own. If I had it do do all over again I would have found a top producer and offered to follopw them around and help them just for the training.

When I started, they didn't have mentors in the sense they have them today. I think many brokers like their newbies to have mentors as a way of delegating training. My first office had a a broker who was a newbie manager, and it was an office that had been falling apart. She filled it with a lot new agents and watched us like a hawk. The company had fabulous post-licensing training, and she added to that with sessions in the office covering crafting offers that sellers could love, negotiating to close gaps between what the sellers wanted and what the buyers were offering, and the many legal consequences of how we did our jobs. She was supervisor and mentor and wise woman all rolled into one. I was really lucky.

No I didn't have either, I had to figure it out on my own for the first four months. Then I bacame a partner and she walked away from being productive and got half my money. I learned the hard way...

Karen Fiddler, Broker/Owner Mentoring wasn't very common when I first got into this business. I did have one when I transitioned into commercial real estate. She taught me everything she knew about the business.

I had a mentor when I started listing new homes...it was the builder....he taught me everything that I know about building a home....and from there I sat for my Massachusetts Builders License (unrestricted) for residential and commercial buildings.... that builder literally put me on the map with new construction in my area....

No mentoring at the onset, it was more wing and a prayer. Later I had two mentors at different times, one taught me to become systems oriented and the other brought a wealth of knowledge and made it easily accesible.

Good Thursday morning Karen. No, I did not have a mentor when I started. Home inspectors looked at newbies in the business as competition.

Good morning Karen. I did not, not sure I would have been a good listener, especially early in my career.

Karen,
I wish I could tell you I did and the wonderful things they did for me. Instead, when I was just a few weeks into the business I was mentoring new agents.

When I started 10 years ago a former co-worker of my wife from many years ago asked me to join him. I would not want to pay a mentorship fee. He let me share his 2 room private office for free. I helped him and got my business started. Some office mentorship includes leads.... In this case he did not. After I learned the ropes I went out on my own. To have realtors work with you one needs to be generous on the bottom line. Most new agents are not looking for a lawyer or service quality contract reviewers. They want a coach to provide leads getting business started....

I started with a company run by 7 owners that were Realtors as well. I learned something from each of them. My Broker was also a Mentor. I learned it all and was fortunate to be starting off at the tail end of the 1996 Recession so they all had time to share the tricks of the trade and standards of the industry.

Interesting. I know that formal mentoring programs are not as common as they should be, but I assumed most people had someone who took them under their wing.
