Absolutely I would but as far as spending the money to get there. I would analyize the ROI first. I've seen homes that the homeowner invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the home LEED certified and green friendly - and cant get it sold.

Can not comment on ROI when selling it. It sounds a little excessive. However, in out of grid rural like Hawaii it makes sense to install solar.
There is a mechanical engineer who is a DIY in Berkerley, CA he came up with many gadgets to recycle water. He has solar car on a beatup van....

Lina,
I like the concept of an eco friendly home, I would definitely install solar panels, etc. We have friends who are selling to the electrical company the surplus of electricity they generate...it does save money in the long run. A

I would do it in a heartbeat, I love that kind of stuff and most likely it is saving them a lot of money also.

Good Thursday morning Lina. That is very admirable. The thing is, while they recoup their investment?

I think this comes down to how important it is to the owner. Most likely will not get the money back. Mark

Yes if it is cost effective and done with an appeal to future buyers in mind. Green is very big here on Kauai!

I would do this. Of course I would also investigating the ROI. It may or may not work. If you have that kind of expendable income...why not do it.

Perhaps if I were young enough to reap the benefit of such a life style.

It would depend on the ROI and what the modifications were. I'm in California, so I did the lawn conversion water rebate thing in the front yard. I'm also replacing my recessed light bulbs with LED bulbs. More for the 2/3 less heat output than the 50w power savings. I also converted area sprinklers to drip lines on my front slope to reduce my water bill.
I'm not a big fan of "eco-friendly" things, especially for the sake of being eco-friendly. For me to make ANY type of investment on my house (sprinkler replacements, buying vs. leasing my router, etc.) I need to see that ROI and have a break-even point within one year. To do it for the sole purpose of reducing a carbon footprint, which has no actual impact on the environment, no thanks.

Lina - Sure I would live in an eco-friendly home, who wouldn't? The questions is would I be willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get there, especially if I wouldn't see the return for 20-30 years, maybe not.

I have several eco-friendly homes for sale. Some off-the-grid completely - the number of people looking for this is growing each year. Makes a lot of sense.

Yes, I would consider doing this. Though, I think it's more difficult in the US in some areas.

Absoultely! I have made more minor efficiency improvements in my current house, but I will hopefully be able to install solar panels in my next one.

Perhaps; who doesn't appreciate the idea of redusing our effect on the environment. It all boils down to cost and return on investment.

Most rehabs are really not that eco friendly, the best that you can do is to leave the home along and not start filling dumpsters with the old bldg materials.

For most people, green improvements have to make economic sense to them. So what is the payback time? How much do the improvements add to the value of the house?

Thank you everyone for participating and answering my question. It appears that if the ROI is there everyone would like to live in an eco-friendly house.
