Why get a license?  Why get into Real Estate if you are not going to go all the way?

 Amanda Brown , I read your profile and I love your life-long learning attitude.  Knowing that, you will WANT to join a Board of Realtors if you become a licensed agent.  The educational resources are amazing!

Credibiltiy and access to training resources.  There are certain expenses you should build in - this is one of them.

Access to the local MLS is key. And you might want to actually get involved and help shape the way your local board does things. 

I believe the last I heard 88% of the listings are in the MLS.  Why would a buyer or seller choose to work with someone not in the mainstream of the real estate industry?

Access to the MLS is the key reason since the MLS is only available throught the local board.

For the most part it is access to the MLS, it is very hard to succeed in this business without that.

Access to the MLS is certainly one reason.  Most boards offer a lot of training and educational events as well.

Legitimacy

Nancy Robinson nailed it, Amanda. Also in many areas you are required to be a member if you will practice as a buyer/seller agent and publish on the MLS.

Because you have decided to become a Realtor so you should be involved in all aspects of the profession.

You should  because the Board governs rules, laws and ethics of the practice of Realtors. It  is a place to go to solve disputes without going to court and a good Board will have training programs and social activities that will introduce you to other like minded individuals who are not trying to recruit or take advantage of your newness in the field.   Some offices will not allow a non board member to show their listings if they are not Realtors. The Boards are for Realtors only.   You may not want  join if you want to remain a sales agent and not become a Realtor. For example if you are a licensee who works strictly for a builder or a licensed assistant.

If your business model includes residential sales, you will discover, choice for the buyer, seller and agent has been removed by NAR and you really have no choice except to join the club.

To be in business, you will be compelled to join the club.

In most cases your BROKER will REQUIRE membership.

You really do not have a choice if real estate is going to be your career. You will need to belong to the local, state and national groups.
