I do not recall any missing items after showings but there have been many instances of stolen appliances, air conditioning equipment and even copper plumbing.

There have also been complaints of agents leaving doors open or unlocked.

I have not thankfully, I always have the talk at a listing appointment about really locking away anything crimals would love to get their hands on, especially medication, guns, and easy to hide electronics.

I also tell my agents, never leave the side of a client in a house that is still being lived in.

I did once a long time ago have a seller call me upset about furniture missing. She felt SURE an agent with a lockbox key had taken it.  In the end she apologized when she found out her son had taken it (with Dad's permission) who forgot to mention it to mom.

That is terrible for the agent and buyer - I showed a house one time that was a pig sty - the agent called me later to ask if I knew about the seller's missing Mont Blanc pen - Honestly - that seller couldn't have know if his kids were missing that house was such a mess - much less a Mont blanc pen -

Two times.

The first time a real estate agent lingered in the kitchen FOREVER. I had to take a call and seconds after I turn away, he found it was time to leave. That evening the owner called to report they had violated the rules I set forth from day one, and their big bottle of Oxy went missing from the kitchen cabinet.  and I never saw that agent or heard of him afterwards.

The second was a Swag Bag for door prize give away went missing at a open house where I had six people staffing the event!

What did I do about it? Learn to trust no one but keep smiling and remove the opportunity.

I know agents say they don't like the listing agent following them around.  SMILE.

Yes once when I was new and doing an open house for another agent a couple came in and they supposedly took prescription drugs from the medicine cabinet. I never forgot that one.

I had an elderly women who swore up and down that her laptop had been stolen, I called both agents who had shown her house and both took offense to me even asking if they had seen it.

The next day my client called and said she had hid it in her pillow and found it when she went to bed

I made some calls to make that next day...

This is an unfortunate incident.  I've never had it happen, but it does.  When I was an active agent, I tried to educate my client upfront to put away all valuables AND medications before all showings and Open Houses.

A listing I represent no?  I did have to share feedback with an agent a couple of weeks ago that asked for feedback.  I told her might be a good idea to tell her client NOT to leave her adult toy charging on the dresser.   These are conversations I should not have to have.   Back to your question, seller should not leave that laying around when your house is listed for sale.  If it is valuable, do not leave it out.

Fortunately, I've never had this happen. I also have my sellers sign off on a document that says I warned them to put away all valuables, expensive electronics, prescription medicine, firearms, etc. prior to showings.

It is terrible. I wish it does not happen to any of us. Those criminals who steal stuff, they can be too skillful to be caught.

I have not encountered a situation like that but I am not surprised by seller or agent reaction to the acusation of stealing .

I would recommend security cameras or just lock a closet that has personal property  that is of value.

Yes, it has happened.  I always talk to my sellers about security of personal property - and safety. In fact I have a short brochure that they get as part of my pre-list package.  They are also told if it does happen they need to file a police report and file with their homeowner's insurance company.
