Great question, Michael Thornton
I have eliminated 'but' and use 'not' sparingly (apart from 'if' and 'try' replaced appropriately by 'when' and 'intend'.)
And yes, I do see a BIG difference!

I don't consider try negative. It's somewhat positive to me. Can't would be negative.

But, if and try are all fine is some usages and can be negative in other usages. I'm very aware when using them. "Negative" is a word I am careful about too.
One phrase I never use is "It will kill (me, us, the deal, etc.) ...". Words have power.

Cheap. I dont like the word cheap, instead I will correct people and insert Inexpensive (cheap refers to quality). I also dont like the word "problem", instead I use opporunity as really, all problems are opportunities. Good question.

Here are the words that annoy me most -
"obviously" - if obvious, then doesn't need to be said
"folks" - I am not your folks - mine are gone, enough of this....
"the notion that" - another ugh of a phrase....
