Yep.  We buy at Sams, Costco or online and save a lot of cash. 

No.  There are still options via the internet.  Consumers will still have choices.

Have you ever seen prices not go up when there is a concentration of business in one set of hands and competition goes down?

No.  I think a speciality store like those are going to join Woolworths, lowest price wins.  See Amazon, Wal-Mart, Costco for examples.

I have already noticed they are creeping up. They use to be some of my favorite stores but I think the whole brick and mortar is taking a hit with Amazon anyways

As more and more business goes digital, that probably decreases the need for a segment of office supplies. Couple that with the ease of online buying and I think that partially explains why these stores are consolidating. I don't believe this will result in higher prices.

Mergers and acquisitions aim to capture the market for better profitability. There is a risk for increased prices if they decide to do so; and, we have no recourse. One thing for sure is there might be some folks terminated as a result of the merger. 

I had not heard Staples was trying to buy Office Depot.   I really do not like the local store, and miss my old Office Depot.

You are so right Michael Thornton - if there is no competition, and monopoly. the businesses try to exploit consumers. Though I still believe, Internet is at rescue.

Yes, it is simple economics. Less competition, means fewer consumer choices and the seller will take advantage of the situation.
