Of course there are a few things EVERYONE will do for every open house. Post on MLS and syndicate sites like Trulia and perhaps a sign in subject properties front yard and a cloud burst of signage the day of the event(for the 1st open house you might hold the cloud burst. read on)
Beyond that, what is done depends on the PURPOSE OF THE OPEN HOUSE.
For example, you may be in need of obtaining more listing in the community. So, make the purpose of the open house to GET MORE LISTINGS. (I have a 14 page book on this single purpose, 1 of 5)
Here are some guides
1. Neighbors (homeowners) are more likely to attend the 1st open house so send them a private showing invitation and make it an event.
2. Debut your skill set and strategy that indelibly imprints in their mind, "Wow! Now this is how you sell a house!" Your affiliate will add greater authority to your presentation and confirm you are rich with resources. Exhibit how you get BUYERS to present an offer on the spot through your strategy and resources but not empowering FSBOs. Let them know you know they are neighbor homeowners and NOT Buyers at this time.
3. Insure they complete the survey.

Good morning Christine. A lot of folks in this area posted on the local MLS, send email blasts and put signs out on the corners.
