My husband doesn't like cats so dogs would be the only acceptable answer for me.

Dogs without a doubt. Their love is unconditional and there is always a joy where you arrive back after leaving the house. Cats appear when they want fed or a leg to rub up against when THEY are in the mood to receive affection.

I am a dog man, for sure! Fortunately, my wife broadened my horizons and brought two cats into our relationship.

My neighbors have 3 dogs that bark at me when I go outside or when they see a squirrel. They yell at the dogs to tell them to stop barking. The dogs are afraid of thunder and have ripped holes in the wood fence to escape when frightened. The neighbor covered the hole with an old mattress frame.
They also have 4 cats that roam the neighborhood and kill birds.

Gotta go with both, although while we are getting our house ready for sale, I sure wish my dog didn't smell this bad. The cat hangs outside all day and doesn't smell near this bad!

Parakeet?
Just kidding - we're dog people but I also love cats. I have cat dander allergies which makes it hard - not impossible, just hard.

For our lifestyle, we prefer cats. We like dogs a lot... as long as they're someone else's. We don't like the constraint of having to run back home by such-and-such a time to walk the dog so it doesn't make a mess -- or burden friends/family members to care for a dog while away on vacation. Not a fan of dog kennels for vacations.

Hank,
Both! Since we travel for our marketing business a lot. cats are easier, and right now we just have one, and like Annette Lawrence said, I like their spirit. A

Dog's, the pet you live with.
Cat's, the pet that lets you live with them.
I'll do the cat. Besides I've NEVER seen a dog demonstrating control of a cat....or people for that matter. I like the free, non-conforming spirit that resides in the heart of the lineage of lion.
