I bought my first house about twenty years ago because I desperately wanted to get a dog. A month after COE, I went to the county shelter and got my dog.

Hi Evelyn;
When I moved to the Outer Banks in 2000, I was in the midst of pesonal turmoil via divorce. I needed some time to find my center again, so I knew that if I attempted to make a big purchase decision (like buying a house), I would more than likely make the wrong choice. I waited until my emotions settled down.
What a great decision that proved to be, because it gave me time to get to know the area. I would drive through different neighborhoods after work, so I could see what they really looked like after everyone came home.
I decided to buy a lot and build my house, because I knew that new homes are cheap living for the first ten years or so, as all the major components are new. And that proved true as well.
My house is my refuge. It's where I recharge. In the afternoons, you'll find me on my back deck with my dog in my lap and a good book, soaking up the late afternoon sun, listening to the song birds and the gentle breeze blowing through the trees, and relishing the relaxing sounds of the waterfall from my goldfish pond. It is serenity itself. There is nowhere else I'd rather be.

When I did buy a home, I wanted the tax benefits, I wanted a home I could do with whatever I pleased (turning a large portion of the yard into a veggie garden was important to me).

We wanted to be a homeowner and not a renter. With homeownership comes the freedom to fix it up and improve it as we saw fit (within restrictions and HOA guidelines).

Hi Evelyn -- I like to ask this question of potential home sellers. It starts to create a conversation about what we will highlight as part of the marketing.

In 1997, I was 27 years old, married, 1 child. Prices were down, interest rates were high, but I refinanced a few times.
A great financial move
