Another option may be to post something on your email reply that you are under the weather and not answering calls, but if it is an emergency that cannot wait until "x" day, then refer them to another agent. You can work out a referral to that agent. Many people will wait, but may be something simple to leave on voice mail as well. It is all about relationships and many clients will understand.

Fortunately, my wife and I operate as a team so if one has a problem for any reason we cover for each other. One of the great blessings of working with your spouse selling real estate!

I make every daily effort to run my business on an iPad. So wherever it is, that is my office.

William and Gabe that's the best way to be. Just be proactive in keeping all up to date. Sickness has its own time table.

Lise, I appreciate the recommendation but as of Monday 29 years in the business and 8 as my own broker I couldn't change now. Beside I think the Big Box Brokerage may go the way of the stock brokers of the 70 -1980's. There were broker in every shopping center. Then the internet happen.

Before my husband got involved in the business I had an arrangement with a co-worker. We backed each other is one was sick or traveling.

Terry I wish my bug would let me still get some work done from home. As I get older I see that fighting off simple flu is not so simple. I text a loan office the other day. He called my agent and knew something was not right. I have a great team in place, the kind that know your next move. It good to have a back plan for sickness, vacations or natural disasters.

Jill, that is nice that you have that kind of arrangement. A few more in the pot is helpful.

I have a business partner who is my back-up. I was out of the office for several days with a bug, myself, a couple weeks ago. I answered my phone and responded to emails and texts and no one even knew I wasn't up to snuff.

I have a nice colleague who I met when we worked for the same brokerage. We each now work for different brokerages, but we're still each other's go to.
We know we each can be trusted and we generally view situations in a similar way.
While this has always worked, it would be smart to add a few more to the go to list.

Cindy, Yes you need a second Assoc Broker or agent to help you along. Thank God Bank is not an issue but your right save a rainy day.

I am in an office with over 150 agents. I'm always keen to identify those agents that would make good partners for back up situations.
To these I will send priority referrals, engage in property discussions, preview their listings, show their listing when appropriate.
From time to time, I will include their identity when discussing with my client the value of having such a big organization at their disposal.
NOTE ADDED: Glad you are feeling better and welcome back.

In terms of meeting cient needs, I think it's a good idea to have another agent cover for you and respond to immediate needs. In terms of income, I always try to have savings in the bank to cover time out for health issues.
