Hi Joseph -- I have doorknocked in the past but no longer do it and never left anything if the occupant was not at home.   Personally, I think it might be associated with leaving items that could gather for days or weeks if someone was away on a trip and alert "bad guys" the house was easily "available" for illegal entry.  

Identify a new or existing business you want to be affiliated with. I like yogurt shops.  

Chat up the owner suggesting you will promote their business door-to-door if they allow you to put up a display in their store. Then get the owner to provide on a quantity of BOGO's.

At the door, attached to your card to a note, "Sorry I missed you. Please enjoy a delicious yogurt compliments of your community REALTOR.'

The magic is capturing their IP AND the message that matters on the display.

Home owners are always interested in recent neighborhood sales. How about a flyer with comps?

At the beginning of my real estate career, I did. Now I don't need.

Something that will get them to call you.

How about a neighborhood market report? What is your home worth? That will get their attention. 

You can alway have some door hangers.  To relly get their attention, staple a pack of forget-me-nots flowers, and a business card to the hanger.

I don't door knock now but when I used to I left market data on the neighborhood. Neighbors always want to know the scoop on what is selling and why.
