Wow what a tough question.  Frankly not sure lowering taxes will work anyway, as most city/state governments are broke or near to it and having to cut services.  Here in Az we had city/state cut jobs and reduce work hours.  Even heard in some places first responders were reduced.  No need for some of them like fire fighters or policemen as the need is small. (thats a joke).

Small business.................NO.  Our country is no longer set up to favor the small business.  Many small business mom and pop shops are being pushed out by the larger entities.  Even things like small franchise are going to start feeling the pinch, and many will likely be gone in about 10 years.  Retail shipping for example, not likley to be around in 10 years.  Hell even Ace Hardware just got shuttered in my area, 3 stores GONE.

In the short term economy will grow from housing sector, financial sector, retail sector.

The only thing I've seen that we build here is houses and harley davidson motorcycles.  Everything else is built abroad and we then pay to have it brought back.  Frankly any long term sustained growth followed by stability has to have consistency.  This to me would mean dependability, and that includes many blue collar jobs like building cars in the US, building things locally at factories like we did before about 50 years ago.  Big hurdle here. It would in my mind take a meeting of the minds to come to the table and each give concessions for the greater good.  Having CEO's, boards, ....etc making a killing while everyone else gets the shaft wont be able to continue.  So they will have to give now, and give up some.  Frankly, if this does not happen the rich will get richer, the middle class will continue to dissapear, jobs will all be abroad except those goofing around on a computer (but as our school systems have been gone down the toilet for year, and our youth is not shinning bright) many of the jobs even in tech will go abroad.  Ever hear Bill Gates and Intel discuss where they try to recruit now, abroad.  They can't find what they need here.

Enough.................The economy is improving, but without change it will always be some volatile.

John,

I think they will gtow from the new tech that is sitting in the wings, being thought up as I write this.  Of course, people need to get educated and be self motivated in learning new things, instead of blaming companies for automating, etc.

Jill Murty, Realtor WOW! what a great and absolutely SPOT ON answer. I think you see exactly where my head is with this question. I especially relate to the "- The practice of giving participation trophies stops." Talk about pure SOCIALISM.

I've never been so frustrated coaching soccer and baseball with my kids. Add to that everyone thought their kid deserved the MVP award as well. I caused a palace revolt whence awarding kids with MVP, Most Improved and Most Inspiriational.

The league tried to prevent me from doing it but I told them I would quit coaching and even worse quit sponsoring multiple teams every year. They did the math and realized that I contributed a significant amount of money to the league coffers. So funny. When it comes to needing $$$ even the SOCIALISTS became CAPITALISTS. LOL!! Big thanks on that one.

Since the gas prices are down, I would say the transportation industry, since it hires a large amount of people.  Then there are all the factories that provide those industries with their parts.

John DL Arendsen - Things will improve when:

- Personal responsibility makes a comeback.

- The entitlement mentality is not encouraged or accepted.

- Schools return to teaching students how to think; not what to think.

- The practice of giving participation trophies stops.

- People vote based on accurate information, not sound bites.

- Responsible spending, not tax increases are seen as the correct way to tackle debt.

- Duplicate government agencies are eliminated.

- There is certainty, so businesses feel safe hiring.

- It is easier fire bad employees.  People who think they're immune to consequences tend to act like it.

- People realize the attitude that successful people should be punished for their accomplishments is misguided.

David Baker Realtor - Laveen Homes for sale Recessions are a predictable given. I've lived through about 6 of them so far. '69, '73, '79, '89, '01 & '07. We always manage to pull through. The World counts on us.

LOL John DL Arendsen .  I would not be surprised if it did come bite us in the arse.  Without making some serious changes I think we will always be volatile in the coming years, and recessions like the one we lived through will visit more often.

David Baker Realtor - Laveen Homes for sale WOW! That's not a comment that's fodder for your own post! You're spot on about everything you said. The only thing that I may beg to differ with you on, however, is the state of our improving economy.

It's been artificially stimulated via ridiculously sustained low interest rates and "QUANTITATIVE EASING" That's going to come back and bite us right in the ARS and squelch any semblance of a recovery. It's a rouse and soon to become a major rout.

Donald Reich In a perfect World I'd agree. But then you read things like this:

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-03-21/why-entrepreneurship-is-declining

Don't get me wrong. I am an ardant supporter and believer in entrepreneurism as I've been fortunate to have 5 children who have been pretty successful at it. However, I'm very fortuante in that not all parents have been been so fortunate and still have kids living at home unemployed, not getting married and trying to figure out how to pay off their college debt.

Ron & Alexandra Seigel That is a spot on answer and one I totally agree with as America has always been the leading innovator on the planet. But then you get China, India and Japan copying it and Russia and Nigeria stealing it.

But you're right tech is where it's at and our young techie minds are the leading innovators in the World. But what about all those youngsters who aren't techies and received their degrees in liberal arts? Just askin......................

Jill Murty, Realtor Great answer and very true. But where's the power behind the throne to get that accomplished?

Debbie Gartner Ha! Always love your sense of humor Debbie. But at 69 I'm not planning to retire anytime soon. I mean I don't golf or fish and I can only spend a couple of hours surfing nowadays so what would I do with the rest of my days? Until I start drooling that is. LOL!
