I need to buy a new washer and dryer. It doesn't need to be large capacity since I live alone and I probably won't get a front loading washer this time. What brand(s) would you recommend?

We always have had a Maytag, and they do not make them like they used to. The company was bought out a few years ago, and they have replaced parts with breakable plastic one. We ended up with Kenmore, and it is great.

Except for a dishwasher everything we have now is Whirlpool which has serviced us well. Pretty sure Kenmore & Whirlpool are same manufaturer, they share several parts in common.

Jeff, unfortunately Maytag was purchased by Hotpoint/GE a few years ago so they are not what they used to be; I had one that was awesome, wish I still had it.
