Crawl Space Vapor Barrier in New Jersey Quest Crawl Space Systems are your local experts for sealing your crawl space for optimal energy efficiency and long life.  Once we've installed our vapor barrier, vent covers, and airtight crawl space door, your crawl space will even be usable as storage space! Below are the steps we take to dry your crawl space.  For more information, check out our crawl space website, or contact us today! Crawl space humidity enters through the crawl space vents during the summertime.  And in the winter, crawl space vents allow frigid air into the space. Combined, these two forces mean a continuous drain on your utility bills as well as a rotting, decaying crawl space under your home.  Additionally, vented crawl spaces will create an access point for insects, animals, and all types of pests, inviting infestations in your home. All of these problems can be helped by simply installing a crawl space vapor barrier, airtight crawl space vent covers and doors, and a crawl space dehumidifier in the space.  The installation usually takes less than a day, and the vapor barrier itself comes with a 25-year warranty.  Read on to see the steps that Quest Crawl Space Systems takes to install a crawl space encapsulation system, or click here to sign up for a free estimate and inspection on a crawl space moisture barrier system in your New Jersey home! Step 1: Install Airtight Crawl Space Doors and Vent Covers Sealing off crawl space vents stops the vicious cycle of moisture and cold constantly entering your crawl space and then moving upwards into your home year-round. Covering the crawl space vents and doors with an airtight seal will make the home more energy efficient. Old-fashioned crawl space doors are not likely to be airtight. It's very important to seal the crawl space door with a newer airtight one when you seal the vents to ensure that the crawl space is completely protected from outside influences. Step 2: Remove any Standing Water in the Crawl Space and Stop all Flooding If your crawl space is experiencing crawl space flooding, that problem must be addressed before anything else is done. Installing a crawl space sump pump with drainage is a great way to deal with groundwater flooding into a crawl space. Plumbing failures can also leak water in the crawl space. Because homeowners will not generally enter their crawlspaces on a regular basis, crawl space plumbing leaks have been known to go unnoticed for days, months, even years! Be sure to fix all plumbing leaks in the crawl space before the encapsulation is done. Step 3: Encapsulate the Crawl Space If you're interested in preventing moisture from seeping up from the crawl space walls and floors, it's best to install a rugged, tear-resistant plastic vapor barrier on the crawl space walls and floors in your home. The crawl space vapor barrier installed by Quest Crawl Space Systems is 20 mil thick and comes with seven layers of polyester cord, high-density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene.  The liner is bright white, as it makes the best use of available lighting.  To allow a visible area on block walls for termite inspector access, Quest Crawl Space Systems of NJ will also install a clear plastic cap on the top of the block walls, allowing vapor barrier protection while providing an installation that will still allow of inspection. Step 4: Install a Dehumidifier in your Damp Crawl Space Once the area is sealed properly, it's a good idea to install a crawl space dehumidifier.  Homes that have had the crawlspaces saturated with humidity will retain some of that moisture in the wood even when the space is encapsulated.  A dehumidifier can dry this out, while making sure that any future moisture is not trapped in the space.  The SaniDry Crawl Space Dehumidifier, available in New Jersey by Quest Crawl Space Systems, is a self-draining, powerful design that's Energy Star Rated and powerful enough to do the job the way you need it to. No matter what your needs in your basement or crawl space, Quest Crawl Space Systems of NJ would like to help!  For a free, no-obligation crawl space vapor barrier installation estimate, call or e-mail us today! Quest Crawl Space Systems serves Bridgeton, Carteret, Elizabeth, Lakewood, Millville, Newark, Paterson, Toms River, Vineland, Willingboro, and many areas nearby.

In recent years, however, science has shown us that dirt crawl spaces are more than an annoyance. They can cause a wide variety of economic and health problems.

Why Dirt Crawl Spaces are a Health Hazard

As much as 50 percent of the air in a home built over a dirt crawl space can come from the crawl; and a sick crawl space can cause problems throughout the home, including:

Excessively high relative humidity levels Growth of harmful molds, fungus, and other microbes and allergens Increased irritation of asthma, allergies, and other respiratory conditions Penetration of radon gas into the home Substantially higher energy costs for heating and air conditioning Rotting of structural wood and damage to other building materials Damage to stored clothing and other personal belongings due to dampness and mildew Increased susceptibility to damage by termites, carpenter ants, and other pests

Symptoms of a Sick Crawl Space

Some people have no idea what's in their crawl space, and others just think of it as a shallow, wet, dirty place that they avoid as much as possible. But crawl space problems can affect your entire home. Some of the signs of a sick crawl space include:

Foul, musty or "sour" odors Wet spots or mold on the foundation walls Standing water, mold, mildew, or algae on the crawl space floor A general feeling of dampness, or the soil is damp when you touch it Visible mold or wood rot on wooden structural members (beams, joists, etc.) Water beading or dripping from pipes or ducts due to condensation The floors above the crawlspace are cold in the winter You've had a termite or carpenter ant problem Belongings stored in the crawl are mildewed or have a musty smell

If your home has any of the above symptoms, then you may have a sick crawl space.

Healing a Sick Crawl

Luckily, we have the prescription for sick crawl spaces, and it begins with a free, no-obligation assessment of your crawl space. A Certified Microbial Remediator will personally inspect your entire crawl space to determine which problems it has, what is causing those problems, and best and most cost-effective remediation measures. These may include:

Installation or re-tucking of insulation removal of organic debris sealing and caulking Installation of a drainage system, sump pump, or dehumidifier Installation of the CleanSpace™ Crawl Space Encapsulation System™

The CleanSpace™ system helps prevent mold, wood rot, pest damage, energy loss, and the other problems associated with dirt crawl spaces by removing organic debris, sealing energy-wasting vents and structural gaps, correcting drainage problems (if needed), and installing a tough, patented, seven-layer polyester-reinforced plastic liner that seals out moisture and promotes a clean interior environment in your home.

Crawl Space Insulation

In addition, we now offer insulation of every crawl space in which we install the CleanSpace™ Solution. We install insulation and a vapor barrier in full accordance with the U.S. Department of Energy recommendations for insulating an unventilated crawl space. Not only will insulating your crawl space and a vapor barrier save you additional energy; it may also qualify you for a Federal Energy Tax Credit.
